Internode and Mitel simplify business path to VoIP
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) telephony is widely used by both residential customers and enterprise organisations for access to low-cost, high-quality phone calls and simple computer integration. However, many small to medium-sized businesses have held off adopting VoIP services due to concerns about the risk and complexity of running vital phone services over their computer networks.
Now, using Internode’s high performance national network, NodePhone Business Trunks service and VMware Virtual Private Servers, Internode customers can engage a Mitel business partner to gain access to the benefits of VoIP telephony using the Mitel Unified Communications Platform, running in the Cloud. Mitel’s inaugural business partner for this service is Tie Networks, which has worked closely with Internode to design and deploy the Mitel solution on Internode’s network.
In a separate move, Internode has also simplified the migration path for business customers wanting to move from PSTN lines to VoIP by today announcing that it can offer the ability to migrate – or “port” – business telephone number ranges from Telstra or Optus to Internode’s NodePhone VoIP service.
Internode product manager Philip Dempster said the Mitel partnership and porting of business numbers made VoIP telephony an attractive path for many more business customers. "As well as being able to retain their existing telephone numbers, customers can adopt a feature-rich telephone system that runs in the Cloud via Internode’s infrastructure, with hosted Mitel virtual PABX services configured and supported by an experienced Mitel business partner," he said.
From today, Internode customers have access to Mitel’s vMCD (Virtual Mitel Communications Director), a real-time hosted IP PABX application that manages unified communications. Controlled by a simple but powerful Web-based management tool, vMCD offers standard PABX functions such as Hold, Transfer, Park, Paging and Hunt, plus enhanced features that include Hot-Desking, Multi-Party Conferencing, Voice to Email and access to Mitel’s complete range of IP Phones.
Mitel partners deploying Mitel’s solution on Internode’s VMware infrastructure will be able to extend vMCD functionality with support for the following:
- vMBG - Virtual Mitel Border Gateway providing an in-office experience for out-of-office users via Teleworker. It is ideal for businesses that need to support home-based employees or employees who need access to the corporate phone system while on the move.
- vMAS - Virtual Mitel Applications Suite, which incorporates Mitel UC Advanced, Mitel Audio & Web Conferencing and Mitel Nupoint Messaging. This suite of tools allows enhanced unified communications and messaging, video conferencing, collaboration, secure corporate chat, real-time presence information, calendar integration and entry-level contact centre functionality.
Mitel vice president for Asia Pacific Gwilym Funnell said this new solution enabled Internode clients to run their business communications from the Cloud, without sacrificing features or flexibility. "Businesses no longer need to install a physical PABX to implement advanced capabilities like automated attendants, contact centre functionality or integrate their phone systems with Microsoft Exchange," he said.
Tie Networks Business Development Manager Chad Hardaker said Tie Networks was excited to partner with Internode, a First Tier ISP that delivered exceptional end-to-end network services. "By leveraging Internode's solid infrastructure with best-of-breed products from Mitel, we are now positioned to provide Cloud-based Unified Communication solutions to businesses across Australia, with confidence," he said.
Internode is offering business number portability in major metropolitan areas initially. By the end of this month, Internode will expand its business number portability coverage to include all of SA, Tasmania and the ACT as well as densely populated and NBN areas of all other states.
Internode also provides the ability to port 100-number ranges from Telstra or Optus to NodePhone Business Trunks.
