About Internode

Internode from the beginning. These are some of the notable milestones and events that have occurred over the life of the Internode company group.

1987

  • Future Internode MD, Simon Hackett, works at the University of Adelaide; helping to build the South Australian component of AARNet, the academic pre-cursor to commercial Internet in Australia.

1990

  • Simon Hackett creates the world's first IP-powered toaster!

1991

  • Internode Systems Pty Ltd (trading as 'Internode') commences business operations.

1994

  • Internode begins offering Internet services to the South Australian marketplace.

1995

  • Internode is connected to AARNet, and commences commercial delivery of Internet services to the South Australian Government.

1997

  • Agile Pty Ltd (trading as 'Agile Communications') founded to be a sister company to Internode, concentrating on building and operating telecommunications infrastructure.

2001

  • Internode launches the first non-Telstra end-to-end telecommunications network in the Coorong.

2002

  • The Internode Games Network launches - a private customer gaming network that grew into one of the largest in Australia.
  • Internode announces completion of first generation Voice over IP telephony service.

2003

  • Internode opens its new corporate head office: Internode House at 132 Grenfell Street Adelaide.
  • All of Internode's Internet services - most importantly, ADSL - become available nationally.
  • Internode Business Connect, an innovative and flexible private IP wide area networking service, is launched.

2004

  • Internode becomes presenting sponsor for the Adelaide Film Festival.
  • The Yorke Peninsula network extends broadband services further into regional South Australia.
  • Internode gains its 100th employee.

2005

  • Internode extends its private backbone with direct links to the United States, becoming a First Tier international data backbone operator.
  • Internode becomes the first ISP in Australia to deliver ADSL2+ broadband services.
  • NodePhone is launched, delivering national carrier-grade IP telephony with low 'distance independent' rates.
  • Internode achieves Cisco Powered Network accreditation.

2006

  • The South Australian Government re-signs its contract with Internode, marking 11 years of continual Internet service provision to the SA Government Internet Gateway.
  • Internode accelerates its ADSL2+ rollout in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, & Canberra; from 67 exchanges to 113.
  • Internode launches Australia's first Annex M ADSL2+, providing faster upload speeds than traditional ADSL services.
  • Internode's 250th employee comes on board.

2007

  • Internode extends its private backbone with massive direct links to the US via Japan on the Australia-Japan Cable (AJC), in addition to its existing and ongoing use of the Southern Cross Cable Network.
  • The Internode Wireless Hotspot network passes 100 access points, including the Citylan network across the Adelaide CBD, and airports in Adelaide, Darwin and Newcastle.
  • Internode's third Internet Data Centre is commissioned, providing up to 1,000 square meters of carrier-grade data centre capacity.
  • New corporate head offices at 150 Grenfell Street are fitted out, as the employee count passes 300.

2008

  • Internode builds regional WiMAX network on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia.
  • Naked ADSL2+ broadband released, removing the need to pay phone line rental for ADSL broadband.
  • The entire company becomes CO2 free and begins purchasing 100% green power.
  • International network extends to Japan, and adds redundancy to the United States.
  • First Internode IPv6 services available to customers. Internode's core network now runs IPv6 natively.
  • Patrick Tapper, Internode's GM moves up to the position of CEO.
  • Sean Habgood steps up from Financial Controller to CFO.
  • Internode ADSL2+ is now available at over 1,400 telephone exchanges across Australia.

2009

  • Major International network expansion completed. Internode's Global network now extends to Singapore and Hong Kong, with dedicated peering links to Amsterdam and London.
  • First Internode Fibre to the Home services available at selected new housing developments across the country.
  • 3G wireless broadband and home phone services now part of Internode's suite of products.
  • The new Basslink fibre optic cable from the mainland to Tasmania is commissioned, with Internode as the first customer.
  • Liz Cornelissen, Internode's Customer Service Manager is appointed as Chief Operating Officer.
  • Internode is now the largest independently-owned broadband services company in Australia. The company has quadrupled in size during the past four years: It now has more than 430 employees and over 150,000 broadband customers nationally.

2010

  • Internode's first National Broadband Network (NBN) customer is connected in Tasmania.
  • Internode hailed as South Australia's largest technology company.
  • The Riverland/Murraylands network is established, extending broadband services in the region.
  • Internode Business Connect is extended into New Zealand.
  • Early adopter trials begin for Fetch TV subscription IPTV services.
  • Internode's Brisbane office opens in Adelaide Street.
  • Internode's Global network is expanded to encircle the globe - allowing Internode to reach anywhere in the network, both ways, around the world.
  • Internode connects its first school - Circular Head Christian School - to the National Broadband Network (NBN) in Tasmania.
  • Together with PC Range, Internode launches the breakthrough AVM FRITZ!Box in Australia.

2011

  • Internode celebrates its 20th Birthday.
  • Fetch TV subscription IPTV services join Internode's suite of products.
  • Internode connects the first mainland National Broadband Network (NBN) customers in Armidale, NSW.
  • Following a 20-month technical trial, native dual-stack IPv6 becomes available as a free option for all existing and new Internode ADSL and NBN customers.
  • Initial retail pricing for the National Broadband Network (NBN) is announced.
  • Internode debuts Fetch TV IPTV over the National Broadband Network (NBN).
  • Internode extends its National Network, establishing a Point of Presence in Darwin and completing Internode's national footprint.
  • Internode's 200th ADSL2+ DSLAM is installed at Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley, South Australia.
  • John Lindsay is appointed Internode Chief Technology Officer.
  • In a deal worth $105m, publicly listed national telecommunications provider iiNet (ASX:IIN) announces its intention to acquire 100% of Internode Pty Ltd and Agile Pty Ltd. Internode Founder and Managing Director, Simon Hackett will also be granted a 7.5 per cent equity stake in the iiNet group, making him a Significant Shareholder in the listed company.

2012

  • IPv6 becomes standard for all new Internode ADSL and NBN customers.
  • As a benefit of joining forces with iiNet, 240 additional ADSL2+ exchanges are added, bringing Internode's total exchange DSLAM coverage to a massive 450 exchanges.
  • NBN Fixed Wireless services launched in Armidale, NSW.
  • iiNet's gaming network - 3FL - merges with Internode's games.on.net.
  • Internode CTO John Lindsay is appointed to the position of iiNet Chief Technology Officer.
  • Internode founder Simon Hackett steps up to join the iiNet Board.
  • IPv6 adoption reaches 5% of Internode customers.
  • Internode debuts NodeMobile SIM-only mobile phone plans.
  • The Internode Fibre Phone Service via the NBN is launched, offering a traditional phone service over the National Broadband Network.
  • Internode hooks up its first National Broadband Network (NBN) household in Adelaide.

2013

  • IPv6 use continues to increase, with 10% of Internode customers now connected via IPv6.
  • Internode's national and global networks expand, taking on traffic for the entire iiNet Group. Global IP connectivity now exceeds 100 Gigabits per second of capacity.
  • Internode launches a range of Mobile Handsets to complement its NodeMobile phone service.
  • Internode consolidates its office locations in Adelaide, moving all staff back to its main buildings at 150 and 162 Grenfell Street.
  • Fetch TV coverage is extended to all Internode ADSL2+ and Fibre to the Home customers, thanks to HLS technology.
  • Internode launches new 4G-capable NodeMobile plans.

2014

  • Internode wins the Roy Morgan Best Home ISP title for the third year in a row.
  • Internode partners with the South Australian Government and Adelaide Council to launch the AdelaideFree wireless network, more than doubling the coverage of the previous Citylan network.
  • Internode connects South Australia's first NBN Fixed Wireless service in Tailem Bend.
  • Call Packs are announced for NodeLine Home and Phone Business plans.
  • Internode adds the iPhone, complementing its existing range of Mobile Handsets.

2015

  • Netflix launches in Australia, available quota-free to Internode customers on eligible plans.
  • Internode, as part of the iiNet group, is acquired by TPG Telecom (ASX:TPM) in September 2015 in a $1.56 billion deal. The acquisition creates Australia's second largest internet service provider.
  • Internode proudly receives the Roy Morgan 2014 Home Broadband Provider of the Year award for the fourth year running.

2016

  • Internode receives the award for Most Satisfied Bundled Phone and Internet Customers in Canstar Blue’s customer satisfaction survey.
  • Internode releases a range of unlimited broadband data plans on NBN, Easy Broadband ADSL2+ and Easy Naked ADSL2+.

2017

  • Internode wins the Roy Morgan 2016 Home Broadband Provider of the Year Award.
  • Internode receives the highest overall customer satisfaction scores for ADSL2+ broadband in the 2017 CHOICE ISP Satisfaction Survey.
  • A brand new generation of entertainment is welcomed into Internode’s range with the latest Generation 3 Fetch Mini and Mighty set top boxes.
  • Internode makes the transition to the NBN even easier, adding the ability for customers to pre-order NBN plans ahead of time.

2018

  • Internode once again receives the Roy Morgan Home Broadband Provider of the Year Award for 2017, making it the 6th time Internode has received this award over the past 7 years.
  • Canstar Blue awards Internode across three categories: Most Satisfied Customers for NBN, ADSL2+, and Bundled Phone and Internet.
  • 10 years after first enabling IPv6, more than 50% of Internode broadband customers are now connected using dual-stack IPv4 and native IPv6.

2020

  • TPG shareholders (Internode's parent company) vote in favour of a merger with Vodafone Hutchison Australia to create Australia’s leading challenger full-service telecommunications provider.
